About

My name is Mel, my wife Sandy is standing next to me in the first photo. I write this blog. It's about life here in rural Sauk county, Wisconsin.

Puff is a dog that lives with me. She sleeps with me at night and hangs out with me during the day. She rides in my arms on the tractor and tries to bite my fingers as I try to steer. She chases cats up trees. I saw her up in an apple tree just the other day, chasing a cat! Puff and the cat, up in the apple tree! Darnedest thing ever!

In the summer I grow a big garden. I love to work in the garden but summers in Wisconsin are too short. Some people move south to get away from long winters; I'm going to build a greenhouse, so I can have more summer... all winter long... right here where I am, in Wisconsin!

The greenhouse will have puffy walls and will be heated by the sun using nothing more than a couple little fans and a few hundred feet of drain tile! I don't know if it will really work like that or not; my inventions don't always turn out as planned, but we'll see?

It'll probably be worth the price of subscription to this blog (free) just to hear, and see for yourself if my subterranean heated greenhouse really works and not to miss an exciting episode in its construction and testing. It's an adventure that I'll be writing about for the next few months unless the whole project blows away, or I get frozen up by our cold Wisconsin winter!

Narrows Creek is located in Sauk County, Wisconsin. I grew up on a small farm next to the creek. I attended a one-room school with 30-some other kids until we were 'integrated' in the 1960's, then I went to a school in Lime Ridge, a small town two miles up the valley. I left the valley for Vietnam and then I came home to live in other cities in Wisconsin: Menominee, Kenosha, Summers... and finally, I came back to the farm on Narrows Creek. It's been a long journey. Here are some of the stories that happened on the way and stories that are happening each day along Narrows Creek.
